Fed Rate Hike, FHA & CFPB Nominations, and New AI Oversight – 09/22/2026 Weekly Mortgage Update Segment

Hi, I’m Adam DeSanctis with the Mortgage Minute, the latest news from the Mortgage Bankers Association. Last week was a busy one in Washington with several developments important to our industry. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time in three years. President Trump nominated MBA alum Matt Jones to serve as FHA Commissioner, bringing significant real estate finance and policy experience to the role. And the Senate Banking Committee advanced Brian Johnson’s nomination to lead the CFPB, sending it to the full Senate for consideration. Meanwhile, the Conference of State Bank Supervisors, or CSBS, released a new AI supervisory framework to help state examiners assess how banks and non-banks manage AI risks. The framework is substantially aligned with MISMO’s AI Risk Management Framework, or FRAME, which gives mortgage lenders, servicers, and vendors practical tools for AI governance. The key distinction, CSBS’ framework is designed for examiners, while FRAME, MBA’s and MISMO’s, is designed for industry practitioners. MBA and MISMO will continue working with CSBS to advance alignment and help the industry navigate evolving AI supervisory expectations. That’s it for this week, and if you haven’t already, go to mba.org/annual26 to register for our annual convention and expo taking place in Chicago, the Windy City, on October 11th through the 14th. I hope to see you there.
